What is a patent ductus arteriosus (PDA)?
PDA is a heart problem that is usually noted in the first few weeks or months after birth. It is characterized by a connection between the aorta and the pulmonary artery which allows oxygen-rich (red) blood that should go to the body to recirculate through the lungs. All babies are born with this connection between the aorta and the pulmonary artery. While your baby was developing in the uterus, it was not necessary for blood to circulate through the lungs because oxygen was provided through the placenta. During pregnancy, a connection was necessary to allow oxygen-rich (red) blood to bypass your baby’s lungs and proceed into the body. This normal connection that all babies have is called a ductus arteriosus. At birth, the placenta is removed when the umbilical cord is cut. Your baby’s lungs must now provide oxygen to his/her body. As your baby takes the first breath, the blood vessels in the lungs open up, and blood begins to flow through to pick up oxygen. At this point, the ductus arteriosus is not needed to bypass the lungs. Under normal circumstances, within the first few days or weeks after birth, the ductus arteriosus closes and blood no longer pass through it. Most babies have a closed ductus arteriosus by 72 hours after birth.
In some babies, however, the ductus arteriosus remains open (patent) and becomes a problem, PDA. The opening between the aorta and the pulmonary artery allows oxygen-rich (red) blood to pass back through the blood vessels in the lungs. PDA is the sixth most common congenital heart defect, occurring in 6 to 11 percent of all children with congenital Heart Disease. Patent ductus arteriosus occurs twice as often in girls as in boys.

Now, people with no health insurance and those on medical waiting lists have another alternative: “world class international medical travel”. Near Misses in Cardiac Surgery $16.46 "Near Misses in Cardiac Surgery," best-seller in its field when originally published, has been reissued with a new foreword by Denton A. Cooley, M.D., Surgeon-in-Chief, Texas Heart Institute. Now endorsed by contemporary leaders in cardiac surgery, extracorporeal perfusion, and cardiology, "Near Misses in Cardiac Surgery" has stood the test of time and will introduce a new generation of cardiothoracic surgeons and interventionalists to principles, timeless as they are essential, that enable the outcomes of cardiothoracic procedures, once performed only by surgeons in the operating room, to be successful in new hybrid suites during a transitional period in our history. Historian Daniel Boorstin has said, "Trying to plan for the future without a sense of the past is like trying to plant cut flowers. No matter what the technical advances are, the same principles that facilitate successful outcomes in surgery (teamwork, communication, vigilance, standardization and simplicity of techniques, anticipation of the next step) apply as well to today’s hybrid procedures. Reading like a medical thriller, "Near Misses in Cardiac Surgery" presents synopses of 43 true cases in which the patients survived, in the expectation that the reader, cast as the surgeon, will determine the cause of the problem and solve it before the patient’s demise. The next section identifies the problem and how it was actually resolved by the surgical team. Each case concludes with a detailed discussion and references. "Near Misses in Cardiac Surgery" has become a resource for the Cardiothoracic Surgery Network’s safety reporting system (www.CTSNet.org) and was the template used by CTSNet as a teaching tool for theanonymous reporting of near-disasters by cardiac surgeons from around the world. Written to challenge the reader that the patient’s fate depends upon his or her ability to make appropriate decisions quickly and under pressure, this book will continue to provide clinical insight, not only for experienced cardiac surgeons, fellows and residents, but for anesthesiologists, cardiologists, internists, medical students, and nurses, as well. |

Cardiac Reconstructions with Allograft Tissues $6.12 Cryopreserved allograft tissues are now standard materials for the reconstructive cardiac surgeon. Since publication of the first edition ("Cardiac Reconstructions with Allograft Valves") in 1989, the field has progressed dramatically with increased clinical use of cardiovascular allograft tissues, with the development of new surgical techniques, and with advances in the understanding of the fundamentals of valve transplantation biology and cryopreservation. As a result, over two-thirds of the present volume represents new material. Fifty-six authors bring their expertise to thirteen comprehensive, lavishly illustrated sections which discuss the principles of the use of homograft valves, major clinical series of homograft valves for both left and right ventricular outflow tracts, cryopreserved allograft tissue for cardiac reconstruction, cell biology of heart valve leaflets, cryobiology of heart valve preservation, morphological, biochemical, and explant pathology studies of allograft heart valves, allograft valve banking, as well as detailed explanation of surgical techniques for valve and root methods for left and right ventricular outflow tract reconstructions, the Ross operation and variants, and complex reconstructions. A final section presents potential future directions for the field. Over 400 illustrations, created expressly for this book, depict the surgical techniques from the perspective of the surgeon standing at the operating table. All surgeons performing pediatric and/or adult valve replacements and reconstructive cardiac surgeries will benefit from the described methods. Cardiothoracic residents and cardiologists will also find the text useful. It will provide the surgeon with an enhanced understanding of the biological and material properties of allografts and increased familiarity with the range of surgical techniques applicable for the use of these valves, particularly in the successful management of challenging cardiac reconstructions. |

Near Misses In Cardiac Surgery $4.79 Near Misses in Cardiac Surgery "has been written on the premise that teamwork, vigilance, standardized techniques, anticipation of the next step (or misstep), and compassion for our patients are requisites to ensure successful surgical outcomes-that decisions are more important than incisions. This book presents synopses of 40 true cases in which the patients survived, in the expectation that the reader, cast as the surgeon, will determine the cause of the problem and solve it before the patient's demise. The next section identifies the problem and how it was actually resolved by the surgical team. Each case concludes with a detailed discussion and selected references. Adrian Kantrowitz $45 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Adrian Kantrowitz (October 4, 1918 – November 14, 2008) was an American cardiac surgeon who performed the world’s first pediatric heart transplant at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn on December 6, 1967. It was only the second time that a human heart had been transplanted into another human being, taking place just three days after Christiaan Barnard’s seminal attempt in South Africa made headlines around the world and ushered in a new era in clinical organ transplantation. Kantrowitz also invented the intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP), a left ventricular assist device (L-VAD), and an early version of the implantable pacemaker. Kantrowitz married Jean Rosensaft on November 25, 1948. His wife was an administrator on the surgical research laboratories at Maimonides Medical Center while he was there. Kantrowitz died at age 90 in Ann Arbor, Michigan on November 14, 2008 of heart failure. |
