Color Atlas of Congenital Heart Surgery $253.99 The real strength of this volume is the depiction of intracardiac pathologic anatomy. I have never seen it done better…this book will fill a void in the educational materials available to help bridge the gap between what the novitiate imagines a congenital lesion to be and how it truly appears…Cardiothoracic residents should look at it frequently and consider it for their personal library. Older and more experienced surgeons will enjoy reading it…" – From Annals of Surgery on the First Edition. This Thorough revision of Color Atlas of Congenital Heart Surgery features 700 vividly reproduced full-color, intraoperative images, taken by the author, Dr. S. Bert Litwin, with a special side-mounted flash to convey exquisite perception of depth in the operative field. In twenty-three comprehensive chapters, Dr. Litwin presents surgical techniques for the full spectrum of cardiac congenital anomalies, including revised and updated text on such topics as repair of straddling tricuspid valve associated with the posterior ventricular septal defect, transaortic repair of outlet ventricular septal defect, double patch closure of the low muscular ventricular septal defects, extracardiac conduit repair in the completion Fontan procedure, recruitment of multiple pulmonary arteries in the repair of pulmonary atresia, updated techniques for repair of hypoplastic left heart syndrome, and extended end-to-end anastomosis for coarctation repair. Throughout the text, the photographs provide vivid representation of three-dimensional spatial relations of congenital anomalies and surgical anatomy. Each photograph is carefully labeled to indicate the patient’s right side, left side, cephalad, caudad, anterior and posterior. An indispensable tool for both the established surgeon and the trainee, this atlas provides a comprehensive compendium of complex cardiothoracic surgical anatomy, the pathology of congenital. |

Mending Defects $17.94 Life in a small town can be tricky. Laid-back Glory Eiben learned long ago that keeping personal information and opinions to herself goes a long way toward staying hassle free in her chosen home town. Much adored by the residents, she’s maintained the life she’s always wanted with good friends, close family, and a successful career. For someone with a rare congenital heart defect, this life is more than she could have hoped for. Leaving behind big city excitement, a demanding position, and a failed relationship, Lena Coleridge thinks this small ski town may be exactly what she needs to come back from her wit’s end. She didn’t think that job politics or social landmines would exist in such a small town. Keeping to herself won’t be an option with these nosy locals. It doesn’t help that she lives next door to one of the more popular residents who seems too easy going and nice to be true. Friendship is inevitable, but as she gets to know Glory, friendship isn’t the only thing on her mind. After her last relationship, Lena doesn’t want anything to do with another complication, and dating her neighbor could definitely get complicated. |

A Practical Atlas of Congenital Heart Disease $249.95 Developed to integrate cardiac anatomy with surgical repair by reviewing individual heart defects within an easy-to-follow reference format, A Practical Atlas of Congenital Heart Disease is designed to allow the reader to examine a congenitally malformed heart while referring to its anatomic and surgical description on a single page spread. Simple line drawings are used to identify the diagnostic anatomic features and to emphasize important surgical landmarks, allowing readers to differentiate the infinitely variable morphology in clinical practice. The anatomic pathologist will also gain an understanding of surgical repairs of postoperative hearts. For virtually every malformation, the position of the specialized conduction tissue is indicated. The book provides examples of malformations and the relevant surgical considerations, reflecting clinical practice: anatomical specimens are shown in the anatomical position, while the surgical figures are shown as they would be seen operatively. This enables the reader to practice mental imaging of the morphologic and spatial relationships that are integral to congenital heart surgery. In addition, some of the illustrated cases and morphology presented in these pages are themselves rare and sometimes unique examples of particular congenital heart malformations. |

Biomedical surgical planning for pediatric ventricular assist device (PVAD). $49.99 An increased effort has been made within the past 5 years to develop pediatric ventricular assist devices (PVADs) to treat young children with congenital heart defects and acquired heart disease — accounting for over 35,000 live births each year in the U.S. Currently, the options available to treat these patients are medication, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), corrective surgery and heart transplantation. Aside from the heart transplant, these options provide temporary treatment solutions. This research project addresses several of the challenges and uncertainties associated with the development of VADs for this target patient population. Anatomic compatibility was evaluated by computer-generated three-dimensional anatomic models of patients ranging from 3-15kg. An anatomic model database was created of 20 pediatric patients, 8.05kg +/- 4.24, with and without congenital heart defects. The database was used to gather anthropometric data, allowing for interpolation of the measurements and virtual fit studies of the 3 generations of the PediaFlow, a new PVAD system under development by our collaborators. Virtual fitting using 3 subjects (3kg, 8kg, and 15kg) allowed for the determination that Generations 1 and 2 of the PediaFlow device would not be fully implantable in patients under 8kg and the trajectory of the inflow and outflow cannulae was determined. A second aim of this research entailed the design of ventricular apical cannulae. Four flanged tip cannulae were fabricated and evaluated through ex-vivo and in-vivo experimentation in which hemodynamic performance and positioning were observed. These cannulae were found to be promising for the PediaFlow system due to the ease of insertion and the conformation to the ventricle. Hemodynamic performance of the PediaFlow flow rates from 0.3 -1.5 1/min up to the point of ventricular suck-down was comparable to the properly positioned cannula currently used in the PediaFlow animal implants. The hemodynamic |

Cardiac Development $209 The importance of the developmental approach for experimental and clinical cardiology is indisputable. Clinical-epidemiological studies have clearly shown that the risk factors of serious cardiovascular diseases, such as atherosclerosis and ischemic heart disease, are already present during the early phases of ontogenetic development. Furthermore, congenital cardiovascular malformations remain the single largest cause of infant mortality from congenital defects in industrial countries. It is therefore not surprising that the interest of theoretical and clinical cardiologists in the developmental approach keeps increasing. Advances in molecular biology accelerated this trend substantially. This book is based on contributions presented at the international symposium The Developing Heart in Prague in May 2000. It is our contention that the biological, electrophysiological, morphological, functional, biochemical and functional approaches employed by distinguished scientists worldwide will provide the reader with a global picture for changes characterizing the developing heart. It should stimulate the curiosity of cardiovascular scientists in gaining insight into the mechanisms of normal and pathological development. |
