Aortic Valve Replacement Information

The Aortic Valve is the valve in between the aorta and left ventricle of the heart. It is normally tricuspid (has three leaflets) but 1-2% of the population are born with bicuspid (has two leaflets) Aortic Valves.

The aortic valve has two known functions. It is where oxygenated blood leaves the heart and eventually travels to different parts of the body. It is also like a cover that prevents the oxygenated blood from flowing or leaking back to the heart when the heart is in a relaxed state after a contraction.

Aging has an adverse effect on the aortic valve, it tends to become harder and thicker and this makes blood flow more difficult. When this happens the heart has to compensate by working harder.

Aortic Stenosis is the medical term for the hardening and thickening of the aortic valve. Aortic Stenosis is the main reason why aortic Valve Replacement Surgery is needed.

Causes Of Aortic Stenosis

Three conditions are known to cause aortic stenosis and the need for an Aortic Valve Replacement surgery. The first condition that is known to cause this problem with the aortic valve is congenitally having a Bicuspid Aortic Valve instead of the normal tricuspid aortic valve. This deformity causes the aortic valve to function improperly.

For some years, it can function normally but sooner or later problems and symptoms will be felt by the person. The cause of having bicuspid aortic valve is still unclear but this defect develops during the early part of pregnancy. This birth defect is also more common in men.

The second condition that is known to cause aortic stenosis is called Senile Calcific Aortic Stenosis. This is the most common cause for aortic stenosis in elderly people (more than 90% of patients above 65 years old). Heavy calcification of the aortic valve causes the blood flow to be disrupted thus requiring the heart to work harder. Scientists are still studying why this only happens to some people and not to most.

The third condition that is known to cause aortic stenosis is due to rheumatic fever as a child or as a young adult. Rheumatic Heart Disease causes scarring and damage to the aortic valve. This can interrupt blood flow and cause aortic Regurgitation or blood flow back to the heart during the heart’s relaxed phase. Rheumatic heart disease is only common in underdeveloped countries.

What Is Aortic Valve Replacement Surgery?

An aortic valve replacement surgery is an open heart surgical procedure that replaces a diseased or defective aortic valve with a new mechanical or biological aortic valve. This procedure usually only takes 2-3 hours if there are no complications and the mortality rate for this surgery is only about 2%.

A biological replacement valve is made from the outer layer of a pig or cow’s heart (pericardium). Human tissue can also be used but this is not commonly used due to the convenience of pericardium sources. Biological replacement valves can only last up to 15 years. For mechanical replacement valves, these practically last a lifetime but the problem is the person has to regularly take blood thinners in order to prevent blood clots.

Aortic Root Surgery: The Biological Solution

Aortic Root Surgery: The Biological Solution

$132.99

The surgical treatment of the aortic valve and root disease, organic and ischemic mitral regurgitation, and endocarditis has made great strides. Still, there is the well-known dilemma: on the one hand the need for anticoagulation in patients with mechanical valves that otherwise guarantee long-term functioning and, on the other, the unpredictable durability of biological substitutes and of valve repair procedures which, per se, do not require anticoagulation. The choice of procedure is determined by factors such as patients’ age, metabolic and bleeding disorders, and bleeding preconditions, as well as such critical issues as the desire to bear children in young women. The book contains a collection of proceedings of The Berlin Heart Valve Symposium 2008 and The Berlin Mitral Valve Repair Symposium at the joint meeting of the Society for Heart Valve Disease and the Heart Valve Society of America in June 2009. It will be attended by internationally renowned experts who will focus on current surgical approaches to and evolving trends in aortic and mitral valve repair, aortic root and valve replacement with pulmonary autograft, aortic allograft, stentless and stented bioprostheses. Further contributions will deal with recent advances in catheter-based percutaneous and transapical techniques, ablation techniques for atrial fibrillation, tissue engineering of heart valves, multi-modality imaging, and anticoagulation.

The real strength of this volume is the depiction of intracardiac pathologic anatomy. I have never seen it done better…this book will fill a void in the educational materials available to help bridge the gap between what the novitiate imagines a congenital lesion to be and how it truly appears…Cardiothoracic residents should look at it frequently and consider it for their personal library. Older and more experienced surgeons will enjoy reading it…" – From Annals of Surgery on the First Edition. This Thorough revision of Color Atlas of Congenital Heart Surgery features 700 vividly reproduced full-color, intraoperative images, taken by the author, Dr. S. Bert Litwin, with a special side-mounted flash to convey exquisite perception of depth in the operative field. In twenty-three comprehensive chapters, Dr. Litwin presents surgical techniques for the full spectrum of cardiac congenital anomalies, including revised and updated text on such topics as repair of straddling tricuspid valve associated with the posterior ventricular septal defect, transaortic repair of outlet ventricular septal defect, double patch closure of the low muscular ventricular septal defects, extracardiac conduit repair in the completion Fontan procedure, recruitment of multiple pulmonary arteries in the repair of pulmonary atresia, updated techniques for repair of hypoplastic left heart syndrome, and extended end-to-end anastomosis for coarctation repair. Throughout the text, the photographs provide vivid representation of three-dimensional spatial relations of congenital anomalies and surgical anatomy. Each photograph is carefully labeled to indicate the patient’s right side, left side, cephalad, caudad, anterior and posterior. An indispensable tool for both the established surgeon and the trainee, this atlas provides a comprehensive compendium of complex cardiothoracic surgical anatomy, the pathology of congenital.

Heart operations today are quite common and relatively low-risk, but in the beginning it was just the opposite. Cardiac operations were reserved for desperately ill patients. The author documents this dramatic transition with profiles of 38 surgeons who were active between 1940 and 1985. The profiles are edited transcripts of interviews videotaped between 1996 and 2004. They tell of the development of new techniques such as the ablue baby operation, a the first heart-lung machine, the first artificial heart valve, and the first coronary bypass operation. They also tell the unusual life stories of the surgeons and allude to professional and institutional rivalries. A particularly valuable part of the book is the author’s brief history of cardiac surgery, designed to orient the reader for reading the profiles that follow.

Unnecessary Heart Surgery

Unnecessary Heart Surgery

$10.89

As shown in the Preface, numerous surveys have concluded that most heart bypass surgery is unnecessary. Supported by hospital records, this is one patientas story of how it happened to him.The book includes a detailed record of the experience from the day he fell on his chest in a touch-football game to the day he was given a fraudulent consent form to sign, to the day the surgeon wrote an entry in which he claimed the surgery was done because the patient wanted it. It goes on to reveal what a house of mirrors consent regulations and law are in one state. Recommendations by the American Hospital Association are the only rules that protect a patient from unnecessary or unwanted surgery and other treatment, but they are not legally enforceable. It reveals that the Patient Bill of Rights is mostly fluff, and the prime example is the point that gives a patient the right to know his doctoras name, but nothing about his education, license, resume or medical record.

Beating Heart Coronary Artery Surgery

Beating Heart Coronary Artery Surgery

$9.02

Originally introduced several decades ago, myocardial revascularization on the beating heart was largely abandoned as new techniques for extracorporeal circulation were developed. While the popularity of coronary surgery on the arrested heart remained undisputed for decades, a belief in the benefits of avoiding cardiopulmonary bypass and electromechanical arrest had sustained interest in techniques for surgery on the beating heart. Combined with the refinement of techniques of coronary exposure and myocardial stabilization, coronary surgery on the beating heart had slowly regained popularity in the 1990s. The result of an important collaboration from several international authorities in the field, Beating Heart Coronary Artery Surgery summarizes the most important and innovative developments in surgical myocardial revascularization that have evolved in recent years. The book is divided into three parts: technical aspects (how to); surgical approaches; and outcomes in off-pump coronary surgery. The reader will be exposed to a comprehensive review of the principles of coronary exposure, preferred surgical approaches, coronary stabilization, management of hemodynamics, graft patency verification in off-pump coronary surgery, and patient outcomes.

All about Heart Bypass Surgery

All about Heart Bypass Surgery

$3.94

This book is for people who are about to have heart bypass surgery, those who have just been through the ordeal, and those who care for a bypass patient. Based on the experience of fourteen informants, the book tells of life before the operation, the decision to have heart bypass surgery, preparation for hospital life, and recovery afterwards. It blends the patient’s widely differing experiences with the surgeon’s expectations, advice and technical demands, and the work of nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and other paramedical experts in the recovery from heart surgery. Most people are shocked the thought that they must have heart bypass surgery. While some feel resigned to their fate, others put on a heroic front; sadness engulfs a few, others are relieved to know what their ailment is, and some become angry. Most want to know why. As a rule, the cost of surgery and hospitalization is not important to them. They want to know if they are going to survive. Although there are signs and warnings of heart trouble, it seems that rarely do most people have much time to prepare for a heart bypass operation, and to make decisions about which surgeons and hospitals to employ. This book helps patients prepare for the operation and for the recovery by sharing the experiences of others, and by outlining the professional help and personal care that are readily available when required.

Valvular Heart Disease in Clinical Practice

Valvular Heart Disease in Clinical Practice

$49.95

Major advances in the management of heart valve diseases have occurred in the past three decades. Doppler echocardiography has become the cornerstone for accurate assessment of valve disease, even allowing identification of disease progression. Surgical treatment of valve disease has also witnessed great advances, having moved from traditional valve replacement to sophisticated repair procedures, with robotic cardiac surgery also showing promising results. Furthermore, in special circumstances, with conventional surgical valve excision has now been being replaced by percutaneous catheter-based valve replacement for aortic and pulmonary disease. This approach reduces the risk from the surgery itself, avoids general anesthesia and many potential postoperative complications.Valvular Heart Disease in Clinical Practice includes chapters from a distinguished panel of contributors looking at the practicalities of diagnosing and treating common heart valve diseases and covering all of the standard clinical and surgical issues. It is designed to assist in the management of patients with valve disease and provide cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, intensivists, and emergency medicine physicians with answers to the clinical questions that arise in their practice.
