Blood flow through a defective bileaflet mechanical heart valve was modeled using steady and pulsatile blood flow conditions under several flow and malfunction severity conditions. The calculations used Reynoldsaveraged NavierStokes equations with Newtonian blood properties. The results showed that the flow upstream and downstream of the defective valve is highly influenced by malfunction severity and this resulted in a misleading improvement in the correlation between simulated Doppler echocardiographic and catheter transvalvular pressure gradients. In this study, two potential noninvasive parameters were proposed using Doppler echocardiography and phase contrast magnetic resonance imaging, for an early detection of mechanical heart valve malfunction. Finally, the relation between the coherent structures downstream of the valve and the valve malfunction was shown and the significant impact of valve malfunction on platelet activation and as a consequence, on thrombus formation was also shown. Consolidated Pop Safety Valves: 1910

Consolidated Pop Safety Valves: 1910

Introduction THE Consolidated Safety Valve Company has within the last two years inaugurated two exceedingly important movements in the safety valve practice of this country movements which are causing universal modifications of design, and, for the first time in the history of engineering, are putting the methods of safety valve rating and specification upon a sound basis. This has, of course, required exhaustive testing and research, in conducting which this Company has spared no expense, deliberately adopting the policy of giving the results freely to the engineering public. This policy has obtained for the Company in this work the co-operation of railroads, of station- ary and marine interests, and of eminent engineers, adding much to the broad application and value of the results obtained. The movements referred to are first, for the rating and specifying of safety valves according to their actual relieving capacities and, second, for increasing their efficiency by modifications in design which make possible the obtaining of larger capacities, and a cleaner, more positive action. .X ITY y Safety Valve Capacity J account of certain of the elaborate tests and extensive research work, conducted by this Company, showing the apparatus A developed, the methods employed and results obtained, has been published in a pamphlet entitled Safety Valve Capacity, which will be sent upon application to anyone interested in this subject. Because of this supplementary publication, the following account of the work will be brief. The function of a safety valve is to prevent the pressure in the boiler, to which it is applied, from rising above a definite point to do this automatically, and under themost severe conditions which can arise in service. For this the valve, or valves, must have a reliev- ing capacity at least equal to the boiler evaporation, under these con- ditions. If it has not this capacity, the boiler pressure will continue to rise, although the valve is blowing, resulting in strain to the boiler and danger of explosion, consequent to over-pressure. Thus, with the exception of a requisite mechanical the most vital factor in reliability, a safety valve is its capacity. Two factors in a safety valve geometrically determine the area of discharge and hence the relieving capacity. These are the diame- ter of the inlet opening at the seat, and the valve lift. The former is the nominal valve size the latter is the amount the valve disc lifts vertically from the seat when in action. The rules for calculating the size of valves to be placed on boilers, which do not include a term for this valve lift, or an equivalent such as a term for the effective area of discharge assume, in their derivation, a lift for each size valve. Nearly all existing rules and formulae are of this kind, which rate all valves of a given nominal size as of the same capacity. To find what lifts valves actually have in practice, and thus test the truth or error of this assumption, t

DISEASES OF THE M08CULAR STRUCTURES OF THE HEART. The parietes of the heart are probably liable to all the vital and organic changes observed in muscular structures. They may exhibit hypertrophy or atrophy, fatty degeneration, and hetero- logous deposits, or become the seat of changes which are secondary to various essential diseases, but especially typhus fever. Their functional diseases, also, seem analagous to those of muscles in general, as we observe augmented or diminished contractility, irregular action, and even a spastic state. Further, we find that a weakened or paralysed condition is produced by the effects of irritation of structures with which they are in connexion; this, as has been already noticed, may be the cause of death in pericarditis; and there appear reasons for believing that a purely’ nervous paralysis may affect one or more of the cavities of the heart. Again, the muscles of the heart may be the seat of inflammation myocarditis), and although this condition is rare, it is probably more frequent than inflammation of the voluntary muscles. It is still to be determined whether the cavities of the heart are liable to change from mechanical causes alone; whether dilatation, for example, is a purely mechanical result of obstruction to the exit of the blood, or whether for its production in valvular disease there is required not only obstruction, but a weakened condition of the heart. As the symptoms of valvular diseases are really those of alterations of the cavities of the heart, we may now properly examine the latter class of affections, premising that although dilatation and hypertrophy so frequently co-exist with alterations of the valves, yet that they occur either as independent affections, or with an amount of valvul…

Recordings are now the primary way we hear classical music, especially the more abstract styles of "absolute" instrumental music. People are more likely to hear Beethoven or Brahms on an iPod than in the concert hall, and rare compositions are often available only in recorded form. In this original, provocative book, Arved Ashby argues that, just as photography redefined visual art, recording technology has transformed our understanding of art music. Contesting the laments of nostalgic critics, Ashby sees recordings as socially progressive and instruments of a musical vernacular, but also finds that recording and absolute music actually involve similar notions of removing sound from context. He takes stock of technology’s impact on classical music, addressing the questions at the heart of the issue: How have recording and digital copying and remastering changed concepts of performance and ideas of music as text? Does literal repetition corrupt the meaning of a musical work, or enable new meanings? Is music a product or a service, and how are notions of access and ownership being changed by converging media? This erudite yet concise study reveals how mechanical reproduction has transformed classical musical culture and the very act of listening, breaking down aesthetic and generational barriers and mixing classical music into the soundtrack of everyday life.

Aortic Root Surgery: The Biological Solution

Aortic Root Surgery: The Biological Solution

$129

The surgical treatment of the aortic valve and root disease, organic and ischemic mitral regurgitation, and endocarditis has made great strides. Still, there is the well-known dilemma: on the one hand the need for anticoagulation in patients with mechanical valves that otherwise guarantee long-term functioning and, on the other, the unpredictable durability of biological substitutes and of valve repair procedures which, per se, do not require anticoagulation. The choice of procedure is determined by factors such as patients’ age, metabolic and bleeding disorders, and bleeding preconditions, as well as such critical issues as the desire to bear children in young women. The book contains a collection of proceedings of The Berlin Heart Valve Symposium which was held in November 2008. It focuses on current surgical approaches to and evolving trends in aortic valve repair, aortic root and valve replacement with pulmonary autograft, aortic allograft, stentless and stented bioprostheses. Further contributions will deal with recent advances in catheter-based percutaneous and transapical techniques, ablation techniques for atrial fibrillation, tissue engineering of heart valves, multi-modality imaging, and anticoagulation.

Biofluid Mechanics: The Human Circulation

$115.95

Part medicine, part biology, and part engineering, biomedicine and bioengineering are by their nature hybrid disciplines. To make these disciplines work, engineers need to speak “medicine,” and clinicians and scientists need to speak “engineering.” Building a bridge between these two worlds, Biofluid Mechanics: The Human Circulation integrates fluid and solid mechanics relationships and cardiovascular physiology. The book focuses on blood rheology, steady and unsteady flow models in the arterial circulation, and fluid mechanics through native heart valves. The authors delineate the relationship between fluid mechanics and the development of arterial diseases in the coronary, carotid, and ileo-femoral arteries. They go on to elucidate methods used to evaluate the design of circulatory implants such as artificial heart valves, stents, and vascular grafts. The book covers design requirements for the development of an ideal artificial valve, including a discussion of the currently available mechanical and bioprosthetic valves. It concludes with a detailed description of common fluid mechanical measurements used for diagnosing arterial and valvular diseases as well as research studies that examine the possible interactions between hemodynamics and arterial disease. Drawing on a wide range of material, the authors cover both theory and practical applications. The book breaks down fluid mechanics into key definitions and specific properties and then uses these pieces to construct a solid foundation for analyzing biofluid mechanics in both normal and diseased conditions.

Replacement of a failing hip joint or other defective organs in the human body by artificial ‘spare parts’ has significantly improved our quality of life. These spare parts have to meet a wide spectrum of mechanical, chemical and design requirements. In this book, the properties and selection of materials for such ‘spare parts’ are deduced from case studies at the start of each chapter. Hard tissue replacements (joints, long bones, dental), soft tissue (heart valves) and tissue engineering are included. The chapters also detail the three generic classes of materials: alloys (including shape memory alloys), ceramics & glasses and polymers. Separate chapters are devoted to the toxicity of implants, the metals zirconium(-zirconium oxide), tantalum, niobium and metallic glasses, soluble metals and Rapid Prototyping techniques for the fabrication of custom made prostheses. The book concludes by a chapter on water as water is always ‘there’ and conditions the interaction between body and implant. Water is the very matrix of life on earth. A peculiarity of the book is its ‘perspective view’, meaning that the authors looked behind the present biomaterials’ décor and included historical backgrounds (real and mythological), future developments, and the relation to nature (plants and geology).

Despite the improved design of biological and Mechanical Heart Valves (MHV), thrombus formation remains a challenge in clinical practice. Abnormal blood flow through the foreign valve components is recognized as the greatest limitation. An important aspect of MHV selection and design lies in the understanding of the fundamental principles that govern the complex dynamical interactions between blood and valve. Therefore, a novel approach has been adopted to predict the valve movement by utilizing the fluid-structure interaction model which is innovative and fundamentally distinct from the prevailing methods of simulation that assume valve movement a priori. Based on a fictitious domain method and an operator splitting scheme, a mathematical formulation has been outlined for a fluid-structure model. Numerical simulations are performed for non-moving and moving rigid bodies to visualize the flow field. Simulations have also extended to rigid rectangular flaps following a rotational movement about fixed points in an unsteady flow as an initial attempt to model a 2D MHV. The study should be helpful to educators and professionals in the field of industrial and biological applications.

Medical research made huge strides in treating heart disease in the 20thcentury, from drug-eluding stents to automatic internal defibrillators. Public awareness of the dangers of heart disease has never been more pervasive. Now,though, ten years into a new millennium, scientists are gearing up for the next great challenges in tackling this pervasive condition. Cell therapy is going to be a key weapon in the fight against heart disease. It has the potential to address many cardiovascular conditions. From heart failure to atrioventricular nodal dysfunction, the young but promising field of cell therapy is set to play a significant role in developing the cures that the upcoming decades of hard work will yield.Regenerating the Heart: Stem Cells and the Cardiovascular System organizes the field into a digestible body of knowledge. Its four sections cover mechanical regeneration, electrical regeneration, cardiac tissues and in vivo stem cell therapies. An array of talented researchers share the fruits of their labors, with chapters covering such crucial issues as the cardiogenic potential of varying stem cell types, the ways in which they might be used to tackle arrhythmias, their possible application to biological replacements for cardiac tissues such as valves, and the varying approaches used in the in vivoevaluation of stem cell therapies, including methods of delivering stem cells to the myocardium. This comprehensive survey of an area of research with such exciting potential is an invaluable resource both for veteran stem cell researchers who need to monitor fresh developments, and for newly minted investigators seeking inspirational examples.
