Mitral Valve Surgery
Bovine or Mechanical Valve for my Mitral Valve Replacement Surgery? Experienced people, please help!!?
I am a 55-year-old female going in for Mitral Valve Replacement surgery, and I need to decide on which valve to get: bovine or mechanical.
If you have any experiences or know anyone who’s had either of these types of valves placed in their bodies, please elaborate on the experience. I want to know the pros and cons of each.

Mechanical valves require lifelong anti coagulation.
This can cause problems of compliance (Forgetting to take the medicine), longer time to heal for cuts, and potential internal bleeding problems especially for women. They have a very long life.
Current bio prosthetic valves have improved considerably in durability. They do not require continuous anti coagulation. They do tend to calcify. This may not be a problem 55 years and above. These valves also have better blood flow characteristics.
These are the general considerations. Individual bio chemistries vary widely.

Development and experimental evaluation of a novel annuloplasty ring with a shape memory alloy core. $69 A novel annuloplasty ring with a shape memory alloy core has been developed to facilitate minimally invasive mitral valve repair. In its activated (austenitic) phase, this prototype ring provides comparable mechanical properties as commercial semi-rigid rings. In its pre-activated (martensitic) phase, this ring is flexible enough to be introduced through an 8 mm trocar and easily manipulated with robotic instruments within the confines of a left atrial model. The core is constructed of 0.508 mm diameter NiTi, which is maintained below its M s temperature (24°C) during deployment and suturing. After suturing, the stiffener is heated to its Af temperature (37°C, normal human body temperature) enabling the NiTi to retain its optimal geometry and stiffness characteristics indefinitely. The NiTi core is shape set in a furnace to the appropriate size and optimal geometry during fabrication. The ring is cooled in a saline bath prior to surgery, making it compliant and easy to manipulate. Evaluation of the ring included mechanical testing, robotic evaluation, static pressure testing, dynamic flow testing and fatigue testing.
